Sustainable New Year Resolutions which are free or low-cost

Sustainable New Year Resolutions

It’s that time of the year again where we prepare to say goodbye to one year, and welcome in the next. Many people look to make sustainable new year resolutions. 2020 has certainly been a year that many of us will be happy to see the back of, and so it feels like a good time to think more about taking care of the world we are living in, as well as ourselves. A huge amount of uncertainty remains around the pandemic, and in addition finances for many are still very strained, therefore becoming more eco-conscious in 2021 needs to be more attainable and affordable than ever.

Here are six sustainable new year resolutions to help inspire you that won’t break the bank:

Refill

You can refill water, cleaning liquids, shower gels and shampoos at your local zero waste or refill station. https://ecomojo.co.uk/product-category/all-liquid-refills/. Pasta, rice, herbs, tea and coffee, nuts and seeds are often sold in plastic which is not even recyclable. These are all available without packaging at zero waste and refill stores. https://ecomojo.co.uk/product-category/bulk-and-refills/ . This also saves money because you are only paying for the product and not the unnecessary packaging.

Shop local where possible

It has never been a better time to make an effort to shop locally. Not only is it better for the environment it also helps your community, and is a great way to show your support. At your local shop or market, you meet the people behind the business. In addition you get better information and get fresher produce. You can even order bespoke items, a service you would never get from one of the bigger businesses.

Carry reusable bags

Carry reusable shopping and produce bags with you to reduce your impact on the environment. Keep a set of bags in your car, your handbag, your coat pocket, or your office drawer. This way, reusable bags will always be within reach. If you do end up without a bag then many stores will have empty boxes that you can use to carry your groceries instead.

Rethink how you get around

Are you like me, and find yourself driving everywhere? This year, make an effort to walk more, cycle more, take public transport or even carshare because it will help decrease your carbon footprint. Not only does this save money but it is also beneficial for your health.

Start composting

Composting is an incredible way to give back to the planet, because it is literally to give back to the earth. Grass clippings and tree leaves, also vegetable peels and cardboard can all be used in a compost pile or bin. Composting helps to reduce waste and improves your soil. In addition it reduces the need for synthetic fertilisers by putting essential nutrients back into the soil. It can also be a fascinating process for children to explore and get involved with. In fact check out the RHS website for loads of great advice on composting .https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?pid=444.

Buy secondhand

This is something that I have always done, however there is still some stigma around it. Clothing, accessories, home items or kitchenware, likewise cars and vans, you can buy almost anything second-hand. Not only will you be making an eco-friendly purchase, as a result you’ll also be saving money. If you buy from charity then you are also benefitting other people too.
